Wii Sports is meant to be not just a sports game for everyone but a video game for everyone, and in that sense it still excels at its role. If you want a serious simulation of each sport there are better examples for all five games, but simulation was never the game’s intent – even with these new, more accurate controls. Wii Sports was never a bad game but we don’t think even Nintendo expected that it would have quite the impact and influence that it has. We still don’t really see the appeal now but despite a bit of lag it works fine and is where the ‘Club’ element of the title comes in, as you’re encouraged to join virtual sports clubs and regularly compete. The real surprise though is that the games can now be played online, an option Nintendo never bothered to implement before – and for the very good reason that half the fun of the game is watching your friends and family wobbling about in front of your TV. Unfortunately there’s not much either the GamePad or Wii MotionPlus can do to help Boxing, which was always the silliest and least accurate of the games. The classic advice to ‘keep your eye on the ball’ is now literal, as you set-up your shot, take your swing, and then watch the ball sail into view on the TV. In fact it’s one of the cleverest uses of the controller so far, as you place it on the floor so that it can show you where the ball and your club is as you move around.
